About Studio Boudoir
Studio Boudoir Photography is owned and run by husband and wife team Henry and Tracy. Henry is the photographer behind Silvercanvas Photography who are well known for their published work of Dita Von Teese which may be seen in her book “Burlesque and the Art of the Teese” and elsewhere. Tracy provides styling, make-up expertise and guides clients through their photo-shoot experience.
Based between York and Hull in a large Victorian house at the foot of the Yorkshire Wolds, Studio Boudoir focus on exceptional quality and technical excellence. Equally able to expertly recreate the vintage looks of the 30s/40s and 50s they are just at home photographing in modern styles drawing on their years of experience creating imagery for a large variety of different clients.
Their studio contains a number of different sets taking in classic boudoir flock and nouveau looks as well as velvet curtains and paper backdrops in a variety of different colours for those who want a clean studio based look.
The studio is outfitted with flash and traditional tungsten lighting (the nearest one can get to arc lights in a small studio situation) and Henry is expert at working with both traditional medium format film as well as digital and both are available for the ultimate in vintage authenticity should you desire it.
Shooting with Studio Boudoir also automatically gives you access to Studio Boudoir’s loan wardrobe, containing many vintage items of clothing lingerie and shoes which can be difficult to source privately.
About the Photographer
Henry has been involved in photography since 1976 when he first picked up a camera and became obsessed with the images he was producing. In 1988 he started to specialise in female portraiture moving to pin-up and cheesecake styles in 1998. This brought him to the attention of Dita Von Teese in 1999 which was the start of a long association which has lasted ever since
Due to this long background in photography Henry has used all forms of the photographic process, from traditional darkroom processing with film and chemicals to the latest digital technology and Photoshop. His expertly retouched worked has been seen on several magazine covers and displayed at exhibitions the world over (last time was in Japan for Peach John, the famous lingerie brand).
While quite happy working with professional models Henry has also gone out of his way to help aspiring models learn to pose effectively and how to use lights to their own advantage. He also on many occasions photographed members of the public and so the creation of Studio Boudoir is not exactly a diversion into new territory. Henry says:
“The aim of Studio Boudoir is to bring high end fashion and magazine photography to the general public. We aim to give anyone access to the kind of imagery which was previously only available to celebrities and famous actors. Also, importantly, at a budget most people can afford.”
Boudoir and Portrait Noir
Boudoir and portrait noir are two of the unique styling options Studio Boudoir offer. Henry says:
“With Boudoir Noir and Portrait Noir (which are terms I invented to describe what I do) I take the control of shadows to greater extremes than is normal in standard boudoir shoots and manipulate exactly what disappears into the dark and what is shown.
The poses become more sultry, sexual and daring yet retain their subject’s modesty and mystery.
This method often results in images whose power resides in what they don’t show rather then in what they do.”
